At the end of the year Half-life will be six years old, and in that time we
have seen a lot happen in the clan scene. There have been teams that have
dominated in their time, teams that showed a lot of promise only to fizzle out,
teams that have been known more for their off-the-server behaviour than their
playing skills, and of course great rivalries. So let us take a walk down
memory lane and have a look at some of those influential teams that have made
an impact on the scene over the years.
[CWA]
Crowbars With Attitude were formed early after HL's release. In the first few
months of the game they were considered one of the better sides out there, with
players such as Trojan and Shadowshifter, but never really made the impact they
perhaps should have in competitions.
During season two of the HLCCL this looked to change. With the addition of
players such as Gilgamesh, Liberator, and Diesel (CHiNX), they looked to be the
team to beat. Unfortunately the squad went inactive just as the season started
and had to pull out. The team stayed around though, and even though they had a
fairly good line-up in later seasons, with players such as Keogh, Watkin,
Steve, Hardman, Cat, Pyth, and at a later date, Badboy, they again never really
made all that much of an impact.
This all changed in the spring of 2001 when then line-up began to look much
more solid. Brothers Keogh and Watkin hit their peak around this time, and were
considered some of the best aimers in the game. Trojan also was in some of the
best form he had seen, and Diesel rejoined the team after a short break away.
Everything seemed to come right for the team, and although they were unlucky to
come 3rd in the Clanbase Cup losing to DM in a thrilling 3 map game that ended
with only 3 frags difference between the sides (Found
here) they did manage to get revenge by beating them in the HLCCL and
winning the title two seasons in a row.
-[D]-
Team Dedication was formed around spring 2002, and from the off were a team to
be reckoned with. With players such as Renkie, Lem and Sharky, they managed to
come 3rd in the Clanbase Cup, nearly beating PC in a match where they were a
man short.
Soon after, the team established themselves as the number one team in the
scene, adding players such as Stasiz from DM, Sh4k, After, and Mass. In the
fall of 2002 they got their revenge on PC, beating them in the Clanbase cup
final 4 maps to 0.
Dedication continued their run well into 2003, beating Pmers in the final on
the spring Clanbase cup (although they nearly slipped up against HOP, winning
only by 1 frag in each of the two maps
found
here), and continuing to win the HLCCL. They then disbanded sometime after
the cup, only to make a short reappearance under the tag RI in this years cup
where they are currently in the final.
[DM]
The Dreadmen were formed early in 1999 and consisted of players such as Sweeper
and Silverbullit, but they never really challenged the top teams in the scene
during the first couple of years. This changed with the addition of players
such as Stasiz, Sipher (Kni), and Swipe (Halife) to the main team around early
2001. The team was soon challenging the best and went on to win the Clanbase
Cup that spring, beating KX in the finals.
Unluckily for DM, their rise also coincided with the rise of CWA, which meant
they were unable to win the HLCCL for a couple of seasons. They did go on to
win it though, and their run as the premier team lasted for a good six to nine
months, where they added other quality players to the side such as Scent (Tim).
With the birth of a new clan who went by name Dedication, and the rise of Pure
Chaos as a dominant team, DM finally began to falter. In the Spring 2002
Clanbase Cup final, DM lost to PC by 4 maps to 1. Soon after the team went
inactive and the players began to move on.
[KIA]
Although Killers In Action have not really won anything, they have still been
an influential team within the HL scene. Led by Eddz, and with players such as
Garpy, Jugger, Kingfrag, Moony and many more, they have at times challenged the
leaders of the pack and even caused a few upsets. But even though they did at
times get their act together with a strong line-up, taking home a trophy always
seemed to just elude them.
Perhaps the greatest success with KIA was the many offshoot teams they formed.
Starting from KIA2 to KIA5, they had a lot of teams that did very well in their
respective divisions.
In all, KIA have been a permanent figure in the HL scene and have produced some
very influential players over the years. At the moment they are currently
inactive whilst most of the team play other games, but it would be a poor bet
to rule out any return for them in the future.
-KR-
The Killer Rabbits started out as a QW (Quakeworld) team that was reformed by
one of the original players named Ronin (later to take the name Fluffy). The
only other member at the start was Snuffy (later to take the name Tex). They
played their matches 2v2 until the addition of another member, Sapphire, in the
middle of '99. Soon after, they added Snowy (Doom) to the roster (who left
after a few weeks), a young player by the name of Rookie (later to be known as
Renkie), and someone named CHiNX who also brought in a couple of his ex PB
partners in Zentek and Loc. When this happened things started to change for KR,
and they were soon asserting themselves as the number one team out there.
The team continued to go from strength to strength, adding such members as INQ
from RI, Chop and Deathrow from XKI, and a later date, players such as Bibi,
Virgin, Mindz and Sandz. The team won every title out there, and even though
they took a few breaks here and there to play other games, they dominated the
scene for almost 2 years. In all that time, they only ever lost one official
match (to a team known as MOV), which is quite an achievement..
Nothing lasts forever though, and towards the end of 2000 the team had an
internal bust up. The result of this was that the team had to leave the KR name
behind. But not all was lost as virtually the same players continued under
another name (PB). The squad had a short spell under the new tag, and picked up
a couple of HLCCL phases before finally retiring from competitive HL.
::PB::
The original Precizion Bomberz team was founded soon after HL's release, and
consisted of players such as Ostrich, Primal, Whoopass, Fubar, Locutus, Zentek
and CHiNX. Even though they did not win any titles (there were really none to
win), they were considered perhaps the best team in europe for first six months
of HL's release (although some Germans may disagree with that as the scene was
very much split back then).
The team also had a spell in TFC under the name Allstars that consisted mainly
of PB players, as well as a few of the best from the other HLDM teams. Again,
they did not win anything, but still competed with the best of them for a short
while.
The team only lasted around six or seven months, but it was resurrected by
players of the KR team for a short while a year and a half later where they
finally managed to win a couple of titles before going inactive again. They did
come back again for a short while six months later with a couple of new players
such as Siberian, but interest soon fizzled out and the team did not compete in
any leagues or cups before being laid to rest for the final time.
PC |
Pure Chaos is a team that seems to have always been there in the HL scene. The
players may have changed over the years, but the clan has rarely missed any of
the competitions that have taken place.
In the early days, PC were perhaps not as good a team as they later rose to be.
They had some good players, such as the founders Canto and Raz, but it was not
until early 2002 that they really started to be a team that could win titles.
It was during that time that they knocked out D in the semi-finals and went on
to beat DM in the final with a team that consisted of Pride, Garpy, Darq, Spr
and Tyron. In the fall of 2002, they again reached the final of the Clanbase
cup with the addition of a few new players such as Sephi - only to this time
lose to D.
The team faltered a little around early 2003, being knocked out the cup in the
1/8 final by CaN. But they kept going, and today have once again a squad that
can challenge the best of them with players such as Moony and Minuz helping to
complete a strong line-up.
They recently reached the semi-finals of the Clanbase cup, only to be knocked
out by RI.
[Pmers]
One of the oldest teams in the scene still going, Pulverise Massacre Every Race
and Species have achieved a lot in their time. For the first year, they were
perhaps only a middling team - one that could give the top clans a good game,
but never really keep up. But through a lot of practice and some exceptional
teamplay, that soon changed. Pmers rose to become one of the teams to
beat with players such as Bullit, Aro, Scream, Kuki, Dr Hook, Bobby D, and a
little later, Saturn48, Deathrow and Sapphire.
Perhaps it was unlucky that when they finally became such a good team, that KR
were also playing at their peak. For a good year or more, both teams battled it
out to win both HLCCL and Clanbase titles, but it seemed fated for Pmers to
always come second. This does not diminish how good a team they were at the
time, as even though KR may have had the edge in individual players, Pmers
still gave as good as they got and many of the matches between both teams were
extremely close.
KR did not stay around forever though, and after leaving the scene for final
time, Pmers were free to be the dominant team in HLDM. Unfortunately Pmers also
went a bit inactive soon after, and even though they did pick up a couple of
HLCCL titles, they never really had a long run as the number one team.
Over the next few years they kept playing here and there and at times caused
problems for some of the top teams, but I do not believe they ever really made
the impact that they did in the earlier years. Fast forward to today though and
Pmers have once again risen to be a great team - winning the Clanbase cup last
fall and again reaching the final this spring. With a line-up that consists of
players such as Vortex, Bobs, Scream, Aro, Pimp and Tolon, and coupled with
years of experience playing together and excellent teamplay, they are certainly
a team to be feared. Not many people would argue with anyone who said that the
current Pmers team is a step above the rest that are currently playing, and
this is also at a time when there are quite a few good teams competing for the
title of HL's number one clan.
[RI]
Raising Inferno were formed at the start of HL, and along with SoD, dominated
the German scene for quite some time. They did not do badly in European
competition either, giving teams such as KR, Pmers and XKI close games.
They had some very good players at the time, such as Allanon, Sebbo, Maverick,
Vader and INQ (who left for KR), and whilst they did not win anything outside
of Germany, they were still considered one of the best.
Perhaps RI's greatest triumphs though did not come in HLDM, but in CS where
they did extremely well.
The squad has recently returned to the HL scene, competing in this year's
Clanbase cup where they will face PMERS in the final. It is unknown how long
they will stay together once the competition is over.
[SoD]
Shriek of the Devil is a team that has been around a long time, although most
of it was spent in CS. In the early days they weren't a bad side, managing to
almost beat KR once on datacore, with a line-up that had players such as
Mozart, Dankuoni, Deckard, Rico, TNT and Dmx. But like RI, they never really
won anything outside of Germany.
The team came back to HL at the beginning of 2004, and added new players such
as Precizion (CHiNX), Trojan, Lem, Taz and Ion to help compete in the Clanbase
Cup (where they reached the semi-finals), and the upcoming HLCCL season.
storm^
Storm was formed some time in 1999 and is still going today (although a lot of
that time they were inactive, with their players competing for other clans).
With an original team of players such as Silk, Rapid, Cell and Phat, they
competed in a lot of the early competitions, but never really made a big impact
on the clan scene.
Today though things are a lot different. For the past year they have been a
force to be reckoned with, as players such as Pain, Rock, Dev, Don, Chop and
Syn have joined their ranks. Perhaps they have not won lots of titles such as
other clans have, but they can certainly compete with those teams and are
always a threat in any competition.
-XKI-
Xtreme Killers International originally started out as three different teams
who merged together. The first was XK, which had players such as Riggz, Kime
and Badboy. They later merged with a team run by Chop and Deathrow, only to
again merge within a few weeks with KAI, which consisted of players such Erazor
and Trinity. Thus XKI was born.
In their relatively short time together, XKI were a controversial team. They
had a great line-up and quite a few people believed that this was maybe the
clan who would beat KR's unbeaten record and perhaps even take the title of
HL's premier team.
But as many know, a collection of good individuals does not always make a great
team, and XKI never really lived up to their promise. They did not record a
single win over any of the top teams at the time, and in the only competition
they took part in (Clanbase cup fall '99), they drew with RI and then lost to
V.
They did have some small success though with an offshoot of the team called
HKI. That team competed in the second HLCCL season and took the title with
relative ease. But XKI was never going to be a success story, and after
becoming known more for controversy with their relationships to other players,
the team began to fall apart. Perhaps the biggest blow to them was their
leader, Erazor, leaving for Quake 3 and two of their better players, Deathrow
and Chop, leaving for KR. The team did try and keep going for a little while
with players such as Clarko, Predator (Tolon) and Silk, but it did not last for
long, and the team that showed so much promise in the start finally
disappeared.
And special mention goes to...
[GLC] - For being the longest surviving
team in the scene. Only Pmers have been around for a similar amount of time.
[ITV] - For being so influential with the
HLCCL in the early days, especially Tarby.
KAA - Who won the first ever HLCCL league.
-V- - Who topped both RI and XKI in their
group in the Clanbase fall cup of '99. They were to play KR in the final, but
the match never took place.
