All in the Aim!

Improving Your Aim
There are a number of ways to which you can improve your aim in online playing,
from simple tweaks to expensive upgrades & complex playing styles.
We'll start from the bottom and work up through them.
First of all dealing with lag
Lag affects your aim and is different from server to server. Ping doesn't
always reflect true weapon lag. For example a USA player on a modem in a USA
based server will more than likely have a better weapon lag than a player on a
high speed internet connection connecting from lets say the UK. Even though the
ping times are almost the same the weapon lag difference is not quiet the same.
So you will need to adjust your aim to suit the lag on the server. This skill
comes from experience and some players can jump between servers without any
weapon lag problems
Well appear to have no weapon lag problems but
they're there.
Good Crosshairs
A good set of crosshairs can make a massive difference to your aim. There's
nothing worst than trying to aim with over large or difficult to see
crosshairs. Most of the top players use very small pin point crosshairs so they
really get into the aiming business. This doesn't always mean 'small rules' I
would recommend you find a set that you like, easy to see, don't take up large
amounts of vision. Only you will know when you have found the right set, give
it a go in some public servers or better still in AG arena.
Learn to track targets
Tracking moving targets is again a skill picked up over time so don't give up
in the first week of trying. Tracking your target is all to do with thinking,
reflex and above all a good mouse. You need to think ahead, know what your
target is going to do next. Where he/she is going to move to and be ready to
move your crosshair within time of their movement, i.e. track them! To improve
this fast speed tracking try increasing your mouse 'sensitivity' in either
Windows or in Half-Life itself.
Sensitivity "3.000000"
When being shot at Let it be a warning that you have been spotted and that you
now have a chance to do something. The number of players I've seen that just
carry on walking in the same direction and route! Never walk straight away or
towards the player who has the xbow, it just gives them an easy kill. I've
killed so many players who do this it is the easiest why for me to kill you and
I will do everything I can to get you in a position where you are either
running towards or away from me. Move in a zig zag movement it will increase
your chances of escape.
Removing the weapon model from view
One thing I found very useful to improve your aim and speed up your movement is
to removing the weapon model from the HUD. By doing this you save the cpu
valuable processing power. Also it only gives you the crosshair to concentrate
on which will greatly improve your aim over time. It can be hard to play with
at first, not knowing what weapon you have selected or is it reloading or not?
Give it time you'll soon pass this stage. Many of the great players play with
the weapon models turned off and once I started playing with the weapon models
off I found it a big improvement and shell not be going back to the old ways,
It makes quiet a difference I can tell you.
To remove the weapon from view type this into the console or add it to your
config.
r_drawviewmodel (removing weapon model)
r_drawviewmodel "1" (weapon on
'default')
r_drawviewmodel "0" (weapon
off)
hud_weapon (displaying your current selected weapon)
*NOTE: This only works in AG mod not standard Valve HLDM
hud_weapon "1" (weapon
indicator on)
hud_weapon "0" (weapon
indicator off 'default')
default_fov (increasing the view area)
I also find playing with default_fov set to a higher value improves movement
& aim by 40%. By increasing your default_fov setting you zoom out the view
and everything moves farer away giving you a fast feel & greater space to
move and aim. The 3 following pics were taken standing in the same spot see how
the view zooms out and how the higher the setting is the more of a 'fish bowl'
vision you get. Give it a go.

default_fov "90" (default
half-life setting)

default_fov "110" (nice
setting)

default_fov "120" (120 - 130
max setting for most servers)
Frames Per Second (fps)
Like with animation the more frames per second (fps) the better your image
& the more smoother game you'll have. This plays an important part in
aiming. The higher your fps the more chance you have of getting a clean smooth
shot. There's nothing worst than missing frames in a fight. Below are some ways
you can check your fps & improve it.

net_graph "3" (displays a net
graph on the bottom of your screen showing your fps rate during playing)
fsp_max "100.0" (sets your max
fps rate, for modem users it's defaulted to 60.0 fps for high speed users 100.0
fps is recommend)
A good graphics card will handle the fps better than old cards and anything
under a TNT2 Ultra should be upgraded to get the best speed. For the best rate
I would recommend GeForce 3 or GeForce 4 cards.
